Students will cultivate the flexibility and perseverance required in area studies to continue examining constantly changing subject areas beyond academic fields, including the basic attitude toward the field, awareness of various issues facing contemporary society, and differences in the gender perspectives of local residents.
Area Studies is an academic discipline that draws on academic knowledge from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences while drawing on the logic of regional specificity. However, area studies is not a discipline that explores only the specifics of a region. Regions are always dynamic, changing as people and capital move, as they are threatened by nature, and as they are affected by their relationships with other regions. Fieldwork is the best way to capture regional change.In this class, students will learn the methodology of fieldwork, and by using the findings obtained through fieldwork, literature and audiovisual materials, they will understand the culture and social structure of the region, and examine the various issues facing contemporary society so that measures can be taken to address them.

多彩な学び
地域研究で求められる、フィールドへの基本的な姿勢、現代社会が抱える諸問題に対する意識、地域構成員のジェンダー観の相違など、常に変化する対象地域に対して、学生は既存の学問領域を超えて検討し続ける柔軟性と忍耐を涵養します。

地域研究（エリア・スタディーズ）は、人文・社会・自然科学の学問的知を横断しながら、地域固有の論理を描きだす学問です。ただし、地域研究は地域の固有性のみを探求する学問ではありません。地域はつねに動態的であり、人や資本が移動しながら、自然の脅威に晒されながら、ほかの地域との関係に影響されながら変化しています。地域の変化を捉える方法として適しているのがフィールドワークです。本授業では、フィールドワークの方法論を学習するとともに、フィールドワークで得られた知見や文献資料・視聴覚資料を活用しながら、地域の文化・社会構造を理解し、現代社会が抱える諸課題へ対策が講じられるよう、考察していきます。
