Through an understanding of the society and life culture of Medieval and Early Modern Europe, which are different in the dual senses of era and region, students will gain a stance to position and grasp history and culture in its context. In addition, students will become able to think about upon what kinds of approaches and historical sources they have obtained their knowledge about the past.
Taking urban societies in Europe from the Middle Ages to Early Modern times as examples from various angles, we will study the diversity of societies and cultures from the historical perspective, and also consider the possibilities of various approaches to historical research.

時代と地域という二重の意味で異文化である中・近世ヨーロッパの社会・生活文化の理解を通して、歴史や文化をその文脈のなかに位置づけて把握する態度を身につける。また、歴史に関する知見が、どのようなアプローチや史資料に基づいて得られたものなのかを考えられるようにする。

中世から近世にかけてのヨーロッパの都市社会を取り上げ、さまざまな角度から捉えることで歴史的側面から社会・文化の多様性を学ぶとともに、歴史研究のさまざまなアプローチの可能性についても考えていく。
