In this class, we will learn the problems of modern Africa from a cultural anthropological perspective. Specifically, we will study fieldwork methodologies, ethnicity and history, conflicts and refugees, youth and life courses, and other topics with reference to theories of cultural anthropology.
In Japanese society, Africa is often described as a set of "problems" such as conflict, poverty and refugees. However, very few people report what people living there actually think and how they deal with various problems. Anthropological fieldwork aims to capture the world from the perspective of people living in the target society. This class explores the potential of cultural anthropology and area studies by presenting some other images of African ethnic conflicts, refugees and youth based on fieldwork.

多彩な学び科目
現代アフリカが抱える諸問題を、文化人類学的視点から読み解くことを目指す。具体的には、フィールドワークの方法論、民族と歴史、紛争と難民などのテーマについて、文化人類学の理論や教員のフィールド経験などを参照しながら理解を深める。
In this class, we will learn the problems of modern Africa from a cultural anthropological perspective. Specifically, we will study fieldwork methodologies, ethnicity and history, conflicts and refugees, youth and life courses, and other topics with reference to theories of cultural anthropology.
日本社会において、アフリカは紛争や貧困、難民といった「問題」とセットで語られることが多い。その一方で、実際にそこに生きる人々が何を考え、どのようにさまざまな問題に対処しているのかが報じられることは極めて少ない。文化人類学のフィールドワークは、対象社会に暮らす人々の視点から世界を捉えることを目指す。本授業では、フィールドワークにもとづき、アフリカの民族紛争や難民、若者たちの新たな像を提示することによって、文化人類学・地域研究の可能性を探究する。
