This course aims to improve students' English input (reading comprehension) and output (writing ability) through intensive reading of American literature.
We will read carefully the best short stories of American literature. Each short story will be read for one week, and each longer story will be read for two or three weeks. Since we will be reading in English, it will be essential to carefully consult a dictionary as you read each text.
The works we will be discussing in this class are all "masterpieces," but what is it that makes a short story a "masterpiece" in the first place? Is there such a thing as a universal masterpiece? Just because our predecessors in the past have given short stories the status of "masterpieces," can we accept their evaluation at face value? With these questions in mind, this seminar aims not only to read stories, but also to verbalize the conditions of a "masterpiece" according to each student's own sense of values.
No prior knowledge of American literature is necessary to take this class. Students who are willing to go through the trouble of reading short stories in English are encouraged to take this class. Students will read short stories at a rate of about 10 pages per week.

アメリカ文学の精読を通じ、インプット（英文読解能力）とアウトプット（読んで考えたことを文章で表現する力）、二つの能力の向上を目指す。
This course aims to improve students' English input (reading comprehension) and output (writing ability) through intensive reading of American literature.
アメリカ文学の名作短編を原語でじっくりと味読する。短いものに関しては１作品につき１週間、長いものに関しては１作品に２、３週間かけて読んでいく。原語で読む授業であるから、丹念に辞書を引いて読む作業は欠かせない。
本演習で取り上げる作品はどれも「名作」の地位を不動にしているものばかりであるが、そもそも何が短編小説を「名作」たらしめるのだろうか？ 普遍的な名作など、存在しうるのだろうか？ 過去の先人が「名作」という評価をくだしたからといって、我々はその評価を額面通りに受け取っていいいのだろうか。このような一連の問いを念頭に、本演習では小説を味読するだけでなく、受講生各自の価値観における「名作」の条件を言語化することも目指す。
本演習を受講するにあたって、アメリカやアメリカ文学に関する事前の知識は必要ない。辞書を引きながら英語で小説を読むという手間を惜しまない学生に受講を勧める。週に10ページほどのペースで短編を読み進めていく。
なお、以下の授業計画に記された作品はあくまで予定であり、受講生の興味関心、授業の進捗によって変更がありえることをお断りしておく。

＊毎週500字程度のレスポンスペーパーの提出を義務付ける。

個人発表・毎週のレスポンスペーパー執筆など、個人の主体性を重視する。クラス全体のディスカッションを行うが、ベースとなるのは受講生個々人が何を考えているかになるので、一人でじっくりものを考えたい学生に向いている授業となる。
