Notes

【Course Objectives】

Within short mystery stories, there is a group of works called kimyo-na aji (strange taste). This name, derived from Ranpo Edogawa, is only used in Japan, but it refers to those stories which do not aim at solving the mystery but in which the mystery often deepens at the end. You may remember the omnibus TV drama “Yo-nimo Kimyo-na Monogatari” (Tales of the Unusual).
In this course, we will examine English and American short stories that should be called “strange taste” stories, and then consider people as puzzling creatures and society as a monstrous environment. In addition, we will reaffirm the appeal of literature through the experience of forgetting ourselves and becoming engrossed in reading.

【Course Contents】

The students will be divided into groups, within which the presenters and moderators will be decided each week, but everyone is supposed to discuss and read the text. If movie and TV drama works are available, we will watch them and discover the differences between those works and the original text and analyze their effects.
