【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

この授業では、ニール・ゲイマンの『グレイブヤード・ブック』（2008）の原文を演習形式で精読し、基本的な英語読解力を強化するとともに、現代ファンタジー作品を批評的な観点から解釈する思考方法と、それを伝えるプレゼンテーション能力を育てることを目標とします。

In this course, students will read closely the original text of Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book (2008) in a seminar style, with the objective of strengthening basic English reading comprehension skills and cultivating ways of thinking that interpret children’s literature works from a critical perspective, as well as presentation skills to communicate these interpretations.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

現代のポップ・カルチャーを代表する作家のひとりであるニール・ゲイマンによる『グレイブヤード・ブック』は、家族を殺され墓場に迷い込んだ少年が、幽霊たちに「誰でもない」（Nobody）と名付けられ、彼らのケアを受けながら成長していく物語である。ラドヤード・キプリングの『ジャングル・ブック』のパロディにもなっているこの小説は、人間ではない存在との関わりによって、アイデンティティを確立していく子どもの姿を描いている。
この授業では、『グレイブヤード・ブック』の原文を受講者による発表を基盤とした演習形式で精読し、参加者全員で内容についてディスカッションすることで、英語読解力の訓練をするとともに、本作に描かれたさまざまなテーマ―生と死の境界、選ばれた家族、成長のプロセス―について批評的な観点から意見を共有する。

The Graveyard Book, written by Neil Gaiman, one of the most prominent authors in contemporary popular culture, tells the story of a boy whose family is murdered and who wanders into a graveyard, where he is named “Nobody” by the ghosts and raised under their care. Written in part as a parody of The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, the novel depicts a child who comes to establish his identity through relationships with non-human beings.
In this seminar-style course, students will closely read the original English text of The Graveyard Book through student presentations and class discussions. Through the analysis of the text, students will develop English reading comprehension skills while sharing their ideas about the novel’s themes, including the boundary between life and death, chosen family, and the process of growing up, from critical perspectives.

受講者は、毎回の授業で扱う予定の範囲のテキストを事前に読み、自分なりの解釈や疑問点をまとめておくこと。また、担当者は該当箇所についての解釈・ポイントを整理した配布資料を作成することとする（各回約2時間）。授業後は配布資料を読んで理解を深めること（各回約2時間）。
