Acquire knowledge about the history and current state of African philosophy, and cultivate philosophical thinking skills to consider its significance and potential in the modern world.
This course introduces the history and current state of African philosophy, which has only been introduced fragmentarily in Japan until now, and discusses its significance and potential in the modern world.
Since the modern era, Africa has suffered under Western colonization and has developed philosophies to combat slavery and discrimination. Africans have believed that their philosophy must save not only themselves but also their oppressors, the Westerners.
Particularly intriguing are concepts like “Ubuntu,” a humanism emphasizing mutual aid and compassion for others, and a moral outlook aiming to restore relationships through “reconciliation” rather than punishment or exclusion. This implies the idea that individual lives are nurtured through the mutual support of all living beings.
Furthermore, we will examine the new perspectives that an African viewpoint brings to contemporary philosophy and applied ethics, and discuss the rich and new philosophy emerging from Africa.

この授業では、これまで日本では断片的にしか紹介されてこなかったアフリカの哲学の歴史と現状を紹介し、その現代世界における意義と可能性について議論します。
近代以降のアフリカは、西洋の植民地化に苦しめられ、奴隷制や差別と闘うための哲学を形成してきました。アフリカ人たちは、自分たちの哲学が、自分たちのみならず、抑圧者である西洋人も救うものでなければならないと考えてきました。
とくに興味深いのは、人間の相互扶助を強調した他者への思いやりとしての人間性「ウブントゥ」の概念や、懲罰や排除ではなく「和解」による関係修復を目指す道徳観です。ここには、生きとし生けるものが支え合うことで個としての生命が育まれるという考え方が含意されています。また、アフリカ的な視点が、現代哲学や応用倫理学にもたらす新しい視野についても考察し、豊かで新しいアフリカの哲学について議論します。
