The aim of this course is to provide students the basics of Japanese ethnology through the study of great authors from the past and today, whether they are Japanese ethnologists working on Japanese themes, Japanese ethnologists working on foreign themes or foreign ethnologists working on Japanese themes. The appropriate academic vocabulary will be taught in the process. Japanese concepts, the history of the discipline, and its methodology will be introduced.
This course is aimed at those who want to discover on serious bases - or upgrade their knowledge of - Japanese ethnology, ethnography, and anthropology.
(Nota bene: This is not an English conversation class).
This course is not an English class: it is a Japanese ethnology course taught in English, with reference to documents written in Japanese, French, and English. Lectures will be conducted in English by the professor. It will introduce funny customs and interesting people, and provide an academic frame and the core knowledge on the matter.
Each class, one or several authors will be introduced (most of the time in chronological order), along with their works and put in parallel in their respective context.

本講座の目的は、古今東西の偉大な作家の研究を通して、日本をテーマとする日本人民族学者、外国をテーマとする日本人民族学者・民俗学者、日本をテーマとする外国人民族学者を問わず、日本民族学の基礎を学ぶことである。その過程で、適切な学術用語も学ぶ。日本の概念、学問の歴史、方法論も紹介する。
日本民族学・民俗学・人類学を本格的に学びたい方、あるいは知識を深めたい方を対象としています。
(注意点:これは英語での会話授業ではない)
The aim of this course is to provide students the basics of Japanese ethnology through the study of great authors from the past and today, whether they are Japanese ethnologists working on Japanese themes, Japanese ethnologists working on foreign themes or foreign ethnologists working on Japanese themes.
