The goal of this course is to deepen knowledge of Japanese culture and spirituality while taking a multifaceted view of Japan's modern history.
First, we will consider what Japan is in the first place. In doing so, we will deal with the formation of a modern nation, while also referring to the Ainu and Ryukyu peoples. Next, we will deal with the history of the formation of the national language in Japan. In religion and culture, we will focus on the emergence of yokai and analyze them from the perspective of gender and nationalism. In terms of literature and thought, we will focus on the major writers of modern Japan, such as Miyazawa Kenji and Mishima Yukio. Particular attention will be paid to the values of the time, such as the view of nutrition, gender, and reincarnation, which appear in their literary works.

この科目は、日本の近代の歴史を多角的にとらえつつ、日本の文化や精神性について、知見を深めることを目標とします。
The goal of this course is to deepen knowledge of Japanese culture and spirituality while taking a multifaceted view of Japan's modern history.
最初に、そもそも日本とは何かについて考えます。その際、アイヌや琉球民族にも言及しつつ、近代的な国家の成立についても扱っていきます。次に、日本における国語の成立史を扱います。宗教と文化では、妖怪の出現に注目し、ジェンダーやナショナリズムの観点から分析します。文学と思想の観点からは、宮沢賢治や三島由紀夫など、日本の近代における主要な作家を扱います。特に文学作品にあらわれる栄養観、ジェンダー観、輪廻転生観など、当時の価値観に注目します。
