In this course, students will study the major events that have shaped the culture and spirituality of modern and contemporary Japan. Culture and spirituality are the basis of our lifestyle and society, and are indispensable for understanding the values of people living in different cultures. Especially in today's globalized society, the ability to understand and explain the basics of culture and spirituality is in greater demand.
Through this course, students will acquire the ability to understand the diverse values of people living in Japanese society, with the following three objectives.
(1) To acquire a basic knowledge of Japanese religious culture.
(2) To be able to explain the main points of the relationship between Japanese culture and spirituality to people from other cultures.
(3) To develop an interest in modern and contemporary events related to Japanese religion, culture, and literature, and to be able to express one's own ideas.
In this class, we will consider what “Japan” is as a modern nation and the“spirituality”of its people from various angles.
The class will focus on Japanese culture and spirituality from the perspectives of nationalism, gender, and“self-formation,”with a particular emphasis on language, religion, media, and literature. Specifically, this course deals with Japanese religious culture such as Shintoism and Buddhism, the state of the Japanese language in the modern era, major modern and contemporary literary works such as Miyazawa Kenji and Mishima Yukio, and the relationship between the media and people.

本講義では、近現代日本の文化と精神性を形づくってきた主たる事象を学びます。文化と精神性は、私たちの生活習慣や社会の基礎であり、異なる文化圏で暮らす人々の価値観を理解する上でも欠かすことのできないものです。とくにグローバル化が進む現代社会において、文化や精神性について基本的なことを理解し、説明できる力は、より求められていると言えるでしょう。
本講義を通して、日本社会に生きる人々の多様な価値観を理解する力とを身につけることを目指し、以下の3点を到達目標としています。
①日本の宗教文化について基本的な知識を習得する。
②異文化圏の人に日本文化と精神性の関係について要点を説明できるようになる。
③日本の宗教や文化・文学に関する近現代の事象に関心を持ち、自らの考えを述べられるようになる。

この授業では、近代的な国家としての「日本」とは何か、そしてそこで暮らす人々の「精神性」について、さまざまな角度から考えます。
そこで本授業では主に、ことば・宗教・文学・メディアを手がかりに、ナショナリズムやジェンダーそして「自己形成」の観点から、日本文化と精神性について取り上げます。具体的には、神道や仏教などの日本の宗教文化、近代における日本語のあり方、宮沢賢治や三島由紀夫など近現代の主要な文学作品、メディアと人々の関わりを扱います。
