| 備考/ NotesNotes |
This course explores the historical, theoretical, ritual, and cultural aspects of religions in Asia, with a focus on South and East Asia. Students will learn foundational knowledge about religions in Asia and how they shape culture, art, and the lives of people. They will acquire the basic terminology necessary to discuss and write about Asian religions in English, as well as the ability to share their own religious and cultural viewpoints with others. By engaging in class discussions, presentations, and group work, students will also practise expressing their own perspectives on religion and culture in English. The course encourages critical reflection on religious diversity and offers students the opportunity to discover and articulate their own views on religions beyond the traditions in which they were raised.
This course examines the religions of South and East Asia, with particular focus on India, Tibet, and Japan. We will examine Hinduism, Buddhism, Shinto, Islam, and Christianity as a minority religion in Asia. Attention will be given to history, key tenets, rituals, arts, and festivals. The overall aim is to explore religions different from our own and to reflect on how religious traditions influence daily life, culture, and society, even in the modern era. Each session will consist of a lecture combined with class discussion, with designated sessions for group work. Selected sessions will include short group presentations and debate. Active participation is expected, including asking questions and exchanging views in English.
