Notes

【Course Objectives】

Throughout the course, students will develop the capacity to grasp the construction of Japan from an external perspective, fostering a nuanced understanding of the country's dynamics, influences, and global interactions.

【Course Contents】

This course is structured into three distinct parts. The initial section focuses on the earliest European encounters with Japan, as documented in books, maps, and artistic representations. The second segment explores the earliest visual depictions of Japan originating from the American continent. Finally, the third part delves into an analysis of the Japanese Diaspora within the Habsburg Empire, specifically in Macau, India, the Philippines, Europe, and the Spanish Americas. This section aims to illustrate the genuinely "global" nature of this trade and the impact of Japanese presence in these regions.
