Notes

【Course Objectives】

After taking this course, students should be able to

(1) utilise the research skillsets they have acquired to explore the religious underpinnings of present-day political conflicts in East Asia as well as those within the East Asian diaspora;
(2) critically engage with religio-political debates over national identity and assess contemporary events and institutions with historical sensitivity; and
(3) appreciate the value and importance of historical research.

【Course Contents】

This is a course that explores two distinct, yet interconnected histories of religion in politics, with a focus on the transnational nature of World Christianity: (1) religious politics in the early modern transatlantic English diaspora; and (2) its reception and re-creation in modern Japan and China. We will begin with religio-political conformity in early modern England and America, and end with a thorough investigation of how major themes in religious politics in the Anglophone Protestant tradition profoundly shaped the role of religion in politics in China, Japan, and among East Asian communities in the UK and the US today.
