備考/ NotesNotes |
After taking this course, students should be able to
(1) utilise the research skillsets they have acquired to explore the religious underpinnings of present-day political conflicts in East Asia as well as those within the East Asian diaspora;
(2) critically engage with religio-political debates over national identity and assess contemporary events and institutions with historical sensitivity; and
(3) appreciate the value and importance of historical research.
This is a course that explores two distinct, yet interconnected histories of religion in politics, with a focus on the transnational nature of World Christianity: (1) religious politics in the early modern transatlantic English diaspora; and (2) its reception and re-creation in modern Japan and China. We will begin with religio-political conformity in early modern England and America, and end with a thorough investigation of how major themes in religious politics in the Anglophone Protestant tradition profoundly shaped the role of religion in politics in China, Japan, and among East Asian communities in the UK and the US today.
1 | Introduction: The History of Religious Conformity and National Identity |
2 | Reformation Politics in Early Modern England |
3 | Conflicts of National Identity in Transatlantic Puritanism |
4 | The Reformation of Manners and the Global Expansion of the British Empire |
5 | Blessed or Deified? The Divine Legitimacy of Monarchy in Early Modern England and Japan |
6 | Encounters of Empires: Christian Infighting in Edo Japan |
7 | Encounters of Empires: Jesuit Accommodation in Ming-Qing China and Protestant Anti-Catholic Propaganda |
8 | Major Themes in the Reception of English Protestant Politics in Modern Japan and China |
9 | Christianity and Empire-Building in Modern Japan |
10 | From Anti-Imperialism to the Three-Self Patriotic Movement in Twentieth-Century China |
11 | Christian Conformity to State Shinto in Post-War Japan |
