| 備考/ NotesNotes |
(1) To introduce students to the value and practice of historical research in order to encourage them to assess contemporary events and institutions with historical sensitivity;
(2) To promote a transnational awareness of the interconnected nature of World Christianity and enable students to critically engage with religio-political debates over national identity;
(3) To empower students to explore the religious roots and ideological underpinnings of present-day political conflicts in East Asia as well as amongst the East Asian diaspora.
This is a course that explores two distinctive, yet interconnected histories of religion and politics: (1) religion and politics in the early modern transatlantic English diaspora; (2) its reception and re-creation in contemporary East Asia, especially in China and Japan. We will begin with the issues of religio-political conformity in reformation and post-reformation England, and end with a thorough investigation of how the major themes in religious politics in the anglophone Protestant tradition profoundly shaped Christian politics in China, Japan, and amongst the East Asian communities in the UK and the US today.
