1.Understand key figures and themes in Japanese philosophy 2.Compare Japanese and Western philosophical assumptions 3.Practice active reading and interpretive strategies 4.Apply philosophical concepts to personal and social questions
This seminar systematically introduces the Japanese philosophical tradition through four pillars: Buddhism, Confucianism, Shinto, and modern philosophy. Without reducing these traditions to Western philosophical frameworks, it aims to elucidate the distinctiveness of Japanese thought while engaging with universal philosophical questions from a comparative philosophical perspective. The secondary source for the seminar is Thomas Kasulis’s Japanese Philosophy: A Sourcebook. This seminar is given in English only. Fluency in Japanese is not required. Each class will have a lecture in the first half. In the second half, students will be assigned joint work and discussion based on the lecture.

Thomas Kasulisの『Japanese Philosophy: A Sourcebook』を底本とする。
