The aim of the course is for students to acquire the basic ideas and methodologies of social research for scientifically and objectively understanding contemporary society, and to become able to conduct social research and analyze and interpret basic data using these methodologies.
In this course, students will learn the basic methods of social research to grasp the reality of modern society scientifically and objectively. Specifically, students will learn about (1) Outline of social research, (2) Design of questionnaire surveys (quantitative surveys), (3) Methods of data arrangement and analysis, etc., and also methods of utilization of official statistics and qualitative surveys. Especially in the case of questionnaire surveys, students will learn the basics of actually creating questions and aggregating and analyzing data on a computer.

授業の中ではPC(Microsoft Excel等)を使用した量的データの分析を実際に行ってもらいます。従って、エクセルなどの操作に不慣れな者は予めその操作について習得しておいてください。授業の中ではエクセルなどの基本的な操作方法についての説明は行いません。
課題などを行うためにはExcelやWordなどのMicrosoft Officeが入ったWindowsのPCを用意することが望ましいでしょう。もちろん、学内のPC教室などを利用して課題を行うことは可能です。なお、Microsoft Office以外のアプリは使用しませんので、特にMacユーザーの方は注意してください。
授業の内の数回はPC教室を使用した実習形式の授業を予定している。

現代社会を科学的・客観的に知るための社会調査の基本的な考え方や方法論を習得するとともに、そうした方法論を用いて社会調査を行ったり、基本的なデータの分析と解釈を行ったりすることができるようになることを目指す。

この授業では、現代社会の現実を科学的・客観的に把握するための社会調査の基本的方法を学んでいく。具体的には、①社会調査の概要、②質問紙調査（量的調査）の設計、③データの整理・分析の方法といったことを学び、さらに公式統計の活用や質的調査の方法についても学習する。特に質問紙調査に関しては、実際に質問項目を作ったり、データをパソコンで集計・分析したりすることの基本を学ぶ。
