This course aims to explore the defining characteristics of German culture and society by examining historical developments since the mid-19th century through the lens of literature and art.
This course explores the representation of social and cultural conditions in literary and artistic works. Focusing on pivotal historical turning points—including modernization, revolution, nation-state formation, war, totalitarianism, and the postwar era—students will analyze how these works captured the contradictions, anxieties, and shifting values of their respective societies.

本講義では文学と芸術を通して19世紀中盤以降のドイツの歴史を考察することで、ドイツの文化や社会の特徴を理解することを目標とする。
This course aims to explore the defining characteristics of German culture and society by examining historical developments since the mid-19th century through the lens of literature and art.
本講義では、文学および芸術作品を手がかりとして、そのなかで社会的・文化的状況がどのように表象されているのかを考察します。近代化、革命、国民国家の成立、戦争、全体主義、戦後社会といった歴史的転換点に注目し、各時代の作品が現実社会の矛盾や不安、価値観の変容をいかに捉え、表現しようとしたのかを読み解きます。
