【Course Objectives】

Through the examination of trans-disciplinary and trans-historical case studies, this lecture investigates human culture and environmental symbiosis worldwide, which is derived from the interplay between human civilization and the Earth's environment. Each student will develop the following sensibilities to face the future of human civilization and the Earth and make a commitment to resolving the issues required for our survival by looking at the various aspects of adaptation, symbiosis, anti-symbiosis, and destruction that the Earth's environment and human civilization have experienced:
❖ Develop global literacy by learning about the geography, history, and cultures of countries that are recognized by the world community, cultivating mutual understanding with foreigners and people from diverse cultures, and discovering new things through travel and tourism.
❖ Reframe human civilization as "The Earth Culture," a single connected organism, so that students can discover their own opportunities within human society's past, present, and future.
❖ Acquire a thorough grasp of how human civilization interacts with the environment to develop subsistence cultures, resource utilization, catastrophe prevention strategies, and environmental adaptation.
❖ Recognize various human lifestyles that have been adapted to certain environments, and use your own words to describe survival tactics and traditional knowledge/techniques for environmental adaptation.
In order to achieve reciprocal harmony between human civilization and the natural environment, especially, students develop environmental literacy based on the aforementioned learning objectives.

【Course Contents】

Human civilization has developed through mutual positive and negative interactions with the Earth's environment and the bounty of the land. Using a variety of viewpoints and concepts from geography, environmental studies, ecology, sociology, anthropology, and civilization theory, this course investigates the "global history of human-environment interaction". How has human society developed through its interactions with the global environment, and what challenges has this process created? The following four key thematic themes will serve as the basis for the course's global introduction of places, cultures, peoples, and histories:
⑴ Environmental Symbiosis: Humanity's Struggle to Adapt to and Resist the Environment
⑵ Animal and Plant Resources: The Rules and Practices of Living with Fauna and Flora
⑶ Exploring the Silk Road: Its History, Culture, Geography, and Religion
⑷ Inquiry-Based Tourism Theory: Learning from Travel and Embarking on Journeys of Discovery

The course seeks to promote critical reflection on our relationship with the global environment and the future of human civilization, drawing in particular from the lecturer's expertise in geography, environmental symbiosis studies, environmental conservation, and international cooperation—as well as their practical field research and experience. Additionally, the course takes place as an experiential "Global Cultural Journey," based on the lecturer's fieldwork experiences and discoveries from places like Central Eurasia, the Silk Road, and the Himalayas. The act of traveling, learning via travel, and the benefits of travel are subthemes that highlight the allure of "exploratory journeys" that have the power to alter people's perceptions and even their lives.

Each session will feature approximately 60 min of lecture and 30 min of activity time (presentations, discussions, workshops, group work, etc.), structured as active learning to encourage student engagement.
