In Japanese society, social exclusion and isolation are widespread today. As families, business companies, local communities and governments fail to act as safety-nets, how can we create new communities to re-build inclusive local economies and democratic municipalities? In the seminar, we will disucuss about these questions, using books and videos as materials.
First, while reading the literature on the international comparison of the current state of Japanese society by Yuki Honda, we will consider what kind of structural problems Japanese society is facing. In addition, we will examine the actual situation of NPOs and social enterprises that are tackling with community regeneration in today's Japanese society, and discuss the actual situation and possibilities of community development. Specifically, we will consider “places where we can feel belonging and safety” and community organizing based on actual examples. In seminars, we will incorporate many dialogues through group work.

今日の日本社会では、社会的排除・孤立が広がっている。家族、会社、地域社会、そして政府がセーフティ・ネットとしての役割を果たせなくなる中で、私たちは、包摂的な地域経済や民主的な地域自治を立て直すために、どのようにして新しいコミュニティを作り出すことができるのか、こうした問いについて、ゼミで書籍や映像を素材に、仲間と対話しながら考えてゆく。

まず、本田由紀による日本社会の現状に関する国際比較の文献を読みながら、日本社会が抱えている社会システム上の問題がどのような問題なのか考察する。その上で、今日の日本社会において、コミュニティの再生を担っているNPOや社会的企業の実態について検討し、そのコミュニティ形成の実態や可能性について議論する。具体的には、居場所やコミュニティ・オーガナイジングについて実例も踏まえて考えたい。なお、ゼミでは、グループ・ワークによる対話を多く取り入れる。
