Notes

【Course Objectives】

This course will be taught in English as part of the Top Global University initiative. It aims to raise students’ awareness and interest in the background of global social issues and conflicts, and to develop their ability to analyze such issues from local people’s perspectives.
We will analyze development issues that emphasize rapid economic growth. Also, students will have the opportunity to learn about the importance of social development and peacebuilding, the guiding principles and activities of international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that promote social development, and other valuable community-based approaches. Also, this class will focus on migration studies.

【Course Contents】

During the course, invited non-Japanese lecturers will not only introduce facts about conflicts and social problems in their countries, but will also present on the linguistic and cultural diversity in their countries. Besides them, a Japanese guest lecturer, who is committed to solving social issues at the grassroots level in developing countries, will discuss the philosophy and practice in their societies.
Students will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of global social issues and peace-building, and to broaden their knowledge of the role of NGOs in social development, by interacting with experienced lecturers through class discussion and collective brainstorming.
