The purpose of this course is to understand issues related to democracy and development through case studies of Latin America, particularly Venezuela.
Since entering the 21st century, Venezuela has experienced a multifaceted crisis encompassing political, economic, and social dimensions. The national economy (GDP) has contracted to one-fifth of its former size in just eight years, while approximately a quarter of the population has fled the country. Although Venezuela represents an extreme case, many of the factors underlying its crisis can be observed, to varying degrees, in other Latin American countries as well.
This course examines a wide range of issues concerning Venezuela's current situation and the historical background of its crisis from political and economic perspectives. The Venezuelan case provides valuable material for thinking more broadly about democracy and development in developing countries. Students are expected to use this foundation to expand their own interests, gather information, and deepen their analytical skills.

ベネズエラを中心にラテンアメリカ諸国の民主主義と開発をめぐる多様なテーマについて理解を深める。
The purpose of this course is to understand issues related to democracy and development through case studies of Latin America, particularly Venezuela.
ベネズエラは21世紀に入ってから政治経済社会の複層的危機を経験してきた。国家経済がわずか８年で５分の１に縮小し、国民の４分の１が国外に逃れた。ラテンアメリカ諸国は政治経済文化的にも多くの共通項をもつ。そのため、ベネズエラは極端な例ではあるものの、ベネズエラに危機をもたらした要因の多くは、ほかのラテンアメリカ諸国においても、程度の差こそあれ見られる。本講座では、ベネズエラ危機の現状と背景について、政治経済の両方から多様なイシューを取り上げる。ベネズエラの事例は、より広くラテンアメリカ地域における民主主義と開発に関して考えるための材料であり、学生にはそこから自らの関心を広げ、情報を集めて考察を進めることが期待される。
