Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) Explain the interactions between the environment and human society from multifaceted perspectives, including science, economics, and culture.
2) Understand the interconnections, synergies, and trade-offs underlying complex environmental challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss.
3) Conceive and propose ways to participate in solving environmental challenges as an informed citizen or professional, drawing on case studies from both Japan and the international community.
This course adopts a dual approach to global challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, by examining both "global rule-making" and "local practice."
In the first half, the instructor will share trends from international conferences, providing insight into the front lines of global environmental discussions. Class will also explore specific cases, including climate mobility in Pacific Island countries, as well as Japan's Kogai (pollution) and the nuclear power plant accident.
The second half of the course focuses on the vital roles of civil society (NGOs/NPOs) and the youth generation. Students will develop the ability to analyze issues through various lenses, such as gender, environmental justice, and culture, moving beyond purely technical or economic perspectives. The class will also discuss citizen science and stakeholder engagement to empower students to take proactive roles in society.

多彩な学び科目
本科目は、担当教員の実務経験、または実務に従事するゲスト・スピーカーの招聘講義等を活かした授業である。
本講義の目標は以下の通りです。
1) 環境と人間の相互作用を、科学・経済・文化などの多角的な視点から説明できる。
2) 気候変動や生物多様性などの複雑な課題の背景にある連関性や、シナジーとトレードオフを理解する。
3) 国際社会や日本の事例を通じ、一市民として、あるいは専門性を活かしてどのように課題解決に参画できるかを構想し、提案できる。

本授業では、気候変動や生物多様性の損失、汚染といった地球規模の課題に対し、「グローバルなルール形成」と「ローカルな実践」の双方向からアプローチします。
前半は、教員が参加する国際会議等の最新動向を共有し、世界の最前線でどのような議論がされているかを学びます。また、太平洋島嶼国等における気候変動による被害、日本の公害・原発事故などの事例も扱います。
後半では、市民社会（NGO/NPO）やユース世代が果たす役割、技術や経済だけではなく、ジェンダーや環境正義、文化といった観点から問題を多角的に考察する力を養います。
環境保全における市民科学やステークホルダーの参画などについても扱い、受講生が社会へ参画するための基礎力を高めます。
