【Course Objectives】

Reading the book, Katsumi Okuno's 'What an Anthropologist Think after Living with the People of the Forest who don't need Thank You or Sorry', the students will deepen their understanding of cultural anthropology and its method of fieldwork and explore the theme of what it means to be human, while moving back and forth between the world of the Southeast Asian hunter-gatherers and present-day Japan.

【Course Contents】

The following topics will be discussed in turn.
*What can we learn from long-term fieldwork in cultural anthropology?
*What are the Penan hunters of Borneo like?
*What does it mean not to have 'thank you' or 'I'm sorry'?
*Why is there a taboo against calling the dead by their names?
*What does it mean that the Penan raise their children together in the community?
Why do Penan give monkey name to birds?
