【Course Objectives】

To gain a correct understanding of Taiwan's post-war history, and for participants to consider what Japanese politics and diplomacy should look like in light of this knowledge.

【Course Contents】

In recent years, Taiwan's vibrant democracy has attracted much attention in Japan. At the same time, there is concern about the impact of China's increasing pressure on Taiwan, which is becoming a stronger power, on Japan's foreign policy and security. Many Japanese also recognise Taiwan as a 'pro-Japanese' country. However, there are also some discourses in Japan that do not fully understand that Taiwan was under a strict dictatorship until the 1980s and that it has a complex historical problem with Japan.
In this class, assigned text-reporter summarises and explains the contents of each chapter of the designated text. In addition, the student in charge of the research report will present a report on the subject matter of the text, which will be discussed with each other based on these reports.
