The objective of this course is to engage in an interdisciplinary exploration of urban transformation in the global city of Seoul, "reading" the city through the "text" of its various "places." While sharing the latest insights on Seoul, the course focuses on the unique "placeness" of specific areas. It aims to help students acquire analytical techniques for examining society through conceptual frameworks such as gentrification, multiculturalism, and national identity. By intersecting perspectives from history, sociology, and media/cultural studies with the sociology of music and food, students will learn to perceive the deeper layers of the city through their five senses and cultivate the multi-faceted perspectives necessary to formulate their own research questions.
This course offers an intellectual exploration of the global city of Seoul, deciphering urban transformations through the "text" of its various "places (spaces)." In the midst of rapid globalization, Seoul has become a site where tradition and modernity, indigenous culture, and massive capital intersect with great intensity. Focusing on the concept of "placeness," this course examines the dynamics of urban change using sociological frameworks such as gentrification, multiculturalism, and national identity. Students will move beyond simple knowledge acquisition to engage in an interdisciplinary study that integrates perspectives from urban sociology, media studies, musicology, popular culture, and the sociology of food, as well as history and political science. By introducing the landscapes, music, and food cultures associated with each location in every session, the course aims for students to develop a sophisticated analytical lens to decode the deeper layers of the city through a multi-sensory experience.

本科目は、担当教員の実務経験、または実務に従事するゲスト・スピーカーの招聘講義等を活かした授業である。
グローバル都市ソウルを舞台に、都市空間の変容を「場所」というテキストを通じて読み解く学際的な探求を目的とする。ソウルに関する最新の知見を共有するとともに、特定の場所が持つ「場所性（Placeness）」に着目し、ジェントリフィケーション、多文化化、ナショナルアイデンティティといった概念を用いて社会を分析する技法を習得する。歴史学、社会学、メディア・文化学に加え、音楽や食の社会学的な視点を交差させることで、都市の深層を五感で捉え、自ら問いを立てて研究していくための多角的な視座を身につける。

本講義は、グローバル都市ソウルを舞台に、都市空間の変容を「場所（空間）」というテキストを通じて読み解く知的探求の試みである。ソウルは、急激なグローバル化の中で、伝統と現代、固有の文化と巨大な資本が激しく交錯する現場となっている。 本講義では、特定の場所が持つ「場所性（Placeness）」に着目し、ジェントリフィケーション、多文化化、ナショナルアイデンティティといった社会学的概念を補助線として、その変容のダイナミズムを多角的に考察する。 受講生は、都市、メディア、音楽、ポピュラーカルチャー、食などの社会学的視点、さらには歴史学や政治学の知見を交差させた学際的な学びを体験する。また、日韓の往来経験を持つ教員陣によるコラボレーション科目として、各回の講義では現地の風景、音楽、食文化などを多感覚的に紹介する。知識の習得に留まらず、五感を通じて都市の深層に分け入り、自ら問いを立て、分析するための「社会学的視座」を養うことを目指す。
This course offers an intellectual exploration of the global city of Seoul, deciphering urban transformations through the "text" of its various "places (spaces)."
