Students learn the role of cities and its geographical/economic development within historic and modern contexts. The course material is focused on Tokyo's historical development since the seventeenth century from architectural, economic and cultural aspects. Students are expected to extend the perspective to other contemporary cities in various cultures.
The class discussion builds on reading materials including the designated textbook and listed readings, students also have opportunities to present their experience and research on a city of their choice (both Japanese and foreign cities are accepted), in front of the class and share their thoughts.
The course is offered online and designed to have both regular Rikkyo students and special international students (incoming exchange students from partner universities). Not only they learn about the role of cities and its historical development, but it is also expected that they have a plenty of opportunity to study together through class discussion. Students are expected not to fear to read English materials, have class discussions, and present their works (including the final report) in English. Some course materials, including the textbook, are also available in Japanese (listed at the bottom of the readings).
Students who are physically present in Tokyo are welcome to join optional on-site field trips, offered twice during the semester, to explore neighborhoods and historically important sites introduced in our readings and lectures.
