The course provides an introduction to Japanese society and its evolution from ancient times to the the contemporary age. The lessons focus on the development of socio-political values, the meaning of cultural practices, and the place of tradition in different historical periods. Throughout the course, students will follow the spread of dominant social and political ideologies, major economic shifts, and the construction of national identity. Special emphasis will be put on the modern age and the recent decades.
The course centers on the development of Japanese society as seen through the lens of cultural production, socio-political ideologies that shaped society, and major economic trends. It will cover practices, beliefs, and habits through examples taken from everyday life, such as the history of manga, the influence of ancient myths, religions, the impact of Buddhism, public and private identities, and political trends since WWII to our contemporary age. Students will gain deep understanding of core values that unite and shape Japanese society, such as harmony, collectivism, honne-tatemae,uchi-soto, and the ganbaru spirit.
The course is multi-disciplinary and will provide theories from different fields of study and various styles of analysis and interpretations. Students are expected to develop and present their own opinions and original ideas during the lessons.

9 | Modernity in political and economic systems before and after WWII. |
10 | The Bubble Age: when home turned to work and work was home. |
11 | Machines, technology and Shinto values: a history of tea service and robot pets. |
12 | The "new Japanese": single life, pets, individuality, and future Japan. |
13 | Japanese society in the age of globalization: is Japan opening up to the world? |
14 | Summary, paper themes, and closing notes. |
