【Course Objectives】

On completion of this course, students will be able to:
a) identify key issues, questions, and debates concerning the history of women and gender relations in modern Japan;
b) explain the causes, contexts, and consequences of political, economic, and social inequalities between the genders;
c) discuss the conditions that have enabled or could enable women's empowerment; and
d) demonstrate the roles of both the state and individuals in shaping gender relations and defining citizenship in modern Japan.

【Course Contents】

Modern Japanese History 1 offers a comprehensive introduction to the history of gender in modern Japan. The course emphasizes developing a broad understanding of how gender relations have shaped modern Japanese society, with a particular focus on women’s experiences. Students will engage with recent English-language scholarship by historians, anthropologists, and political scientists, exploring transformations in gender roles and the diverse experiences of women throughout modern Japanese history.
