Notes

【Course Objectives】

By the end of the course, students will be able to identify key debates in the history of gender in modern Japan and explain how political, economic, and social institutions have shaped gender inequalities. Students will also develop the ability to analyze historical changes and continuities in gendered roles and opportunities, and to demonstrate how both state policies and individual actions have influenced gender relations and ideas of citizenship.

【Course Contents】

This course offers an introduction to the gender history of modern Japan from the Meiji period to the present. The course examines how modern Japanese society has been shaped through changing relationships among the state, the family, labor, empire, and everyday life, with gender as a central perspective of analysis. Particular attention is paid to women’s experiences, while masculinity, sexuality, and LGBTQ histories are also explored as integral components of gendered social relations.
