| 備考/ NotesNotes |
This course explores contemporary Japanese working life through literature and fieldwork. By examining a range of career trajectories in today’s Japan—particularly those that are less visible or often overlooked in mainstream discourse—the course aims to illuminate the diversity of Japanese society and to understand the most recent social and economic changes unfolding in Japan and beyond.
In this course, we seek to understand what it means to work and live in contemporary Japanese society by moving beyond clichés and stereotypes.
Through work, individuals not only sustain their everyday lives but also construct a sense of self-worth and identity. The course examines the political and economic dimensions of individual lives as people negotiate with the external world in the arena known as “work.”
We begin by reading texts that address: (1) the significance of work in human life, and (2) ethnographic accounts of working life in Japan. As students develop an understanding of the social functions of work, they will identify two individuals to interview.
Students may conduct interviews independently or work in pairs or small groups. Necessary arrangements will be made to accommodate differences in language proficiency and cultural knowledge.
Students will analyze their interviewees’ narratives of work within the contemporary socio-cultural and historical contexts of Japan. The findings will be shared through class presentations and presented in written form as a final report.
