備考/ NotesNotes |
The course follows the formation and development of socio-political institutions, economic systems, and business networks in Japan. Special emphasis is given to the unique roles assigned to gender and social class within each political and economic system, and to the distinct values they represent in different periods of time. The course covers key changes in important historical ages, from the first female empresses and goddesses, that had a major symbolic role in Shinto tradition, through the rise of the shogunate, the military system, the formation of modern Japan, the economic and cultural prosperity of Edo period, and the fast-changing gender roles, work styles, and family structure with the rise of virtual networks and alternative lifestyles.
Japanese society evolved in an island that was closed to outside influence over a long period of history. As a result, it developed unique styles of networks and defined roles for different segments of the population. These are reflected well in the structure of society and the responsibilities that each social group and gender was - and still is - expected to perform, whether in the family unit, in the military system, or in the organization of the modern nation and the workplace. The course follows the development of political and economic institutions starting with the ancient empress system, with an emphasis on key ideologies of Confucianism, Shinto, and Buddhism that form the foundamental values of social and political ethics up to the contemporary time. The lessons provide a historical background of the evolution of institutions and ideas, but will focus on the construction of the modern nation from Meiji period, post-WWII age, and the fast changes taking place in the modern age.
