| 備考/ NotesNotes |
By the end of this course, students will be able to explain key features of Japanese colonial rule in Korea and analyze how imperial policies shaped social relations, migration, and everyday life. Through close engagement with a historical fiction and selected historical readings, students will learn to connect structures of colonial governance with lived experiences across different historical moments. The course also aims to develop students’ ability to read literary and historical texts critically, participate in structured discussion, and express historical arguments clearly in written form.
This course examines Japanese colonialism with a primary focus on Korea from the late nineteenth century through the post-World War II period. Using Min Jin Lee's historical fiction Pachinko, the course explores how Japanese imperial rule shaped everyday life, migration, labor, family, and identity across generations. Lectures and selected historical readings introduce key features of Japanese colonial administration, while Pachinko is read alongside them to examine the experiences of Koreans under empire and in the Japanese metropole. Rather than surveying the full scope of Japan's colonial empire, the course focuses on a single historical context in order to approach colonialism as a relationship between imperial power and colonized society.
