This course aims at helping students deepen understanding on Japanese society from the viewpoint of circular use of resources, and equip themselves with knowledge and approaches for building circular economy. Students will also acquire skills for interdisciplinary discussions in English.
The course introduces examples of circular use of resources in Japan’s Edo period before examining scientific significance of using solar energy as the base for economy. It will then look into the effects of industrialization and dependency on fossil fuel that started in Meiji period. It will discuss possibilities and challenges of recent move toward circular economy with the help of conversations with guest speakers.

There will be lectures, small group discussions, meetings for group project, and presentations of tasks all done in English.
A rough estimate of required English level: CEFR B2、TOEFL(IBT) 80、IELTS 6、TOEIC 750、Eiken Pre-First grade
Please bring an appropriate device to access Canvas LMS and/ or online forms as we will be using these platforms for handing out materials and collecting tasks during the class.

この科目は、受講生が資源循環の視点から日本社会への理解を深めると同時に、資源循環型社会を作るための考え方と、英語での学際的なディスカッションの仕方を身に着けることを目標とします。

この科目では、まず江戸時代の資源循環が紹介され、その基盤となった太陽エネルギー利用の意義を、科学的な視点から検討します。次に、明治時代以降の工業化の中で起きた化石燃料依存とその影響を考察し、最後に、近年の資源循環型社会構築への取り組みの可能性と課題を、ゲストスピーカーとの対話も参考に議論します。
