Notes

【Course Objectives】

The objective of the course is to provide students with the overview and the basic knowledge of tourism and tourism studies. At the end of the course, students are expected to have a basic understanding of tourism and to be able to analyse various issues related to tourism, taking cases that are close to themselves.

【Course Contents】

The course will allow students to learn keywords, basic concepts, and topics studied in tourism tudies. During the course of this process, students will be trained to analyse various problems and challenges around tourism by considering cases that can be found in their own communities and neighbourhoods. By doing so, students are encouraged to think how tourism can contribute to the development of local communities, what is sustainable tourism, and how each one of us can contribute to them.

The course will be based on lectures, but there will be group discussions and students will be asked to submit reaction papers at the end of each session in order to nurture their abilities to think,organise thoughts and express opinions in writing.

3 History of tourism: Understanding the history of tourism and the impact of social and economic development

5 Tourism and natural resources: Exploring the relationships between tourism development and environmental protection and conservation
6 Tourism and cultural resources: Examining the relationships between tourism development and the protection and promotion of culture
7 Tourism and infrastructure: Examining the relationships between infrastructure devevlopment and the protection of tourism resources
8 Economic impact of tourism: Understanding direct and indirect economic impacts of tourism
9 Tourism business: Tourism business, its roles and responsibilities
10 Tourism and information: Examining how tourism and tourists have been impacted by different types of information including media and SNS.
11 Tourism development: Tourism development, its objectives and challenges
12 Tourism, tourists and local communities: Understanding economic, social, and cultural impacts of tourism on tourists and local communities
13 Tourism and sustainable development: Exploring local community development while satisfying tourists' needs
14 In-class final test

Students are expected to revise what was covered in the class every week, double check their understanding of key concepts, organise their thoughts about issues that were covered in the class,and write down questions, if any, which should be asked in the next class. When an assignment is given,students are expected to come to the next class, fully prepared.
