The course aims at introducing Japan’s political and economic challenges and opportunities in a rapidly changing world, Japan’s position on the world stage, its power mechanisms, policy choices and institutions. In interactive ways, students will learn to apply political economy and international relations concepts to analyze and understand the relevance of global issues for Japan and put Japan’s domestic and foreign policy strategies in a global perspective.
Japan’s strategies for global, regional and domestic issues. After introductions, global issues such as climate change, peace/security, poverty, migration/displacement, global health etc. will be introduced, focusing on their significance for Japan and the region (Asia-Pacific). Case studies will look at how Japan is contributing to international and regional efforts to tackle global issues while furthering its own political and economic agendas.
1 | Introduction – Japan and the global political economy; definitions (including major global issues); scope; methodology; interaction with students - hear from the students on their particular interests in this course in order to tailor it to their learning goals and needs as much as possible. |
2 | Student Engagement – This session aims at understanding the interface between the students’ broader interest of studies and the potential of the course. Each student will present their specific interest and develop their learning objective for the course. |
3 | Japan’s position in the global political economy – This session will examine how Japan is linked to global issues defined in session 1; each student (or small groups) will contribute to this sessions with a focus on his/her (or their) specific interest as presented in session 2. |
4 | Global political economy – the bigger picture: definitions, mechanisms and institutions (G7, G20, WEF, UN, WB/IMF, other international and regional alliances etc.) |
5 | Japan’s strategies – how is Japan positioning itself in today’s global world order; what strategies (such as “Free and Open Indo-Pacific”) and institutions/mechanisms (FTA, EPA, JETRO, Keidanren, MoFA, JICA, SDF Support to International Peacekeeping, Tokyo Global Dialogue, TICAD, Japan-US Strategic Partnership, Japan-EU Summit, Mekong-Japan Summit etc.) |
6 | Global Issues and Japan - case study 1 – climate change, energy security, biodiversity, disaster risk reduction (students who chose their research topic under this heading will come prepared to give a 5-8 minute presentation) |

The students will do reading/research on their selected topic (case study) and the course topics and prepare short notes/papers and presentations. This will be further explained in the first two sessions of the course. Some readings will be given to the students for most sessions; occasionally, they will be asked to send in short reflections (thoughts) on these reading materials (as assignments in Canvas).

The course aims at introducing Japan’s political and economic challenges and opportunities in a rapidly changing world, Japan’s position on the world stage, its power mechanisms, policy choices and institutions. In interactive ways, students will learn to apply political economy and international relations concepts to analyze and understand the relevance of global issues for Japan and put Japan’s domestic and foreign policy strategies in a global perspective.
