The course aims at introducing the world's and Japan’s political and socio-economic challenges and opportunities through political economy analysis. In interactive ways, students will learn to apply political economy, political geography, international relations concepts and analysis tools to understand the global political economy and global issues, their relevance for Japan and put Japan’s domestic and foreign policy strategies in a global perspective.
Part 1: Theory/concepts, definitions, analysis tools. Global issues and their interconnectedness. Geopolitics and the state of the global economy, Japan's and the world's major systems/institutions/strategies to deal with global, regional and domestic issues.
Part 2: Global issues (climate change, security, poverty, migration/displacement, global health, AI etc.) will be introduced one by one. International efforts and Japan's role in tackling global issues. The students will contribute with case studies.
| 1 | Introduction – Japan and the global political economy; definitions (including major global issues); scope; methodology; interaction with students - hear from the students on their particular interests in this course in order to tailor it to their learning goals and needs as much as possible. |
| 2 | Student Engagement – This session aims at understanding the interface between the students’ broader academic interests and the potential of the course. Each student will present their specific interest and develop their learning objective for the course. |
| 3 | State of the global (political) economy and Japan’s political and socio-economic situation – This session will look at the main developments in the global economy and how Japan is positioned to meet the world's challenges. |
| 4 | Global political economy – the bigger picture: definitions, mechanisms and institutions (G7, G20, WEF, UN, WB/IMF, other international and regional alliances etc.) |
| 5 | Japan’s strategies – how is Japan positioning itself in today’s global world order; what strategies (such as “Free and Open Indo-Pacific”) and institutions/mechanisms (FTA, EPA, JETRO, Keidanren, MoFA, JICA, SDF Support to International Peacekeeping, Tokyo Global Dialogue, TICAD, Japan-US Strategic Partnership, Japan-EU Summit, Mekong-Japan Summit etc.) |
