1. Discuss Japanese culture and society from a cross-border social sciences perspective.
2. Question essentialist understandings of Japan by recognizing the transcultural and transnational elements of Japanese culture and society.
3. Develop critical thinking, discussion, and academic English reading skills.
4. Undertake undergraduate-level research and write a research report.
This course departs from a cross-border social sciences approach to the study of Japanese culture and society. By problematizing the concepts of nation, culture, and tradition, we will question stereotypical images of Japan in their historical, political, and socio-cultural trajectories. Focusing on the processes of mobility, migration, and cultural diffusion, this course introduces students to Japan from a transcultural and transnational perspective.
This course will be taught in English and is designed to help students develop critical thinking, discussion, and research skills. Students will take part in a cross-cultural exploration of ideas and works by Japanese and non-Japanese scholars through in-class lectures, group discussions, homework readings, and other activities.
Each class will focus on a topic, exposing students to a range of sociological themes and concepts and their applications in the study of Japan. Students are required to actively engage in preparing for in-class discussions and activities by completing weekly homework assignments. At the end of the course, students will do an oral presentation and write a research report on a topic related to the course contents.
