備考/ NotesNotes |
• Students will learn to identify and explain how definitions and practices of “social justice” are constructed, maintained, and challenged through the intersections of culture and communication.
• Students will develop the ability to synthesize and to apply critical theories by analyzing the relationship between communication and civic engagement in a variety of situational contexts.
• Students will implement critical thinking and writing skills by producing a series of critical reflections regarding communication practices observed within social justice issues.
• Students will participate in collaborative learning and demonstrate their knowledge of course concepts by leading one another in meaningful class discussion.
• Students will design and present their own arguments, empowering them to advocate for social issues they care about.
This course is designed to reveal the intricate relationship between social justice, communication, and persuasive advocacy within an increasingly global and digital world. We will apply critical communication theories to gain a better understanding of how diverse cultures, languages, and positionalities construct difference in ways that reinforce (or resist) power. With an orientation toward social justice, we will engage in projects that collaboratively recover hidden figures from the margins of history and employ principles of design thinking to better serve our communities.
