【Course Objectives】

Course Objectives (required)
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
a) Analyze speculative films through the lenses of otherness, identity, and power;
b) Critically engage with themes of first contact, cyberworlds, and dystopias as reflections of cultural and social concerns;
c) Evaluate the role of speculative narratives in shaping perspectives on difference and societal anxieties; and
d) Present well-supported arguments about speculative films, integrating textual analysis with theoretical concepts.

【Course Contents】

This course explores the representation of difference and otherness in speculative films, focusing on Hollywood productions. We will examine how films depict encounters with the Other, imagined cyberworlds, and dystopias, analyzing the sociocultural anxieties and philosophical questions these narratives reflect. Each thematic section will include a film screening, critical discussion, and analysis of relevant theoretical frameworks. The course concludes with student presentations that synthesize course themes and apply them to selected films.
