| 備考/ NotesNotes |
On completion of this course, students will be able to describe key historical patterns in the representation of East Asia in American cinema, and to conduct close analyses of films by examining how narrative, character, and visual techniques shape representations of race, gender, class, and cultural difference.
This course examines cinematic representations of East Asia and East Asians in American popular cinema, with attention to how such representations have been shaped by U.S. historical, social, and cultural contexts. Beginning with the concept of Orientalism as a historical framework, the course explores recurring patterns through which East Asia has been imagined in Hollywood films, including images of threat, exoticism, gendered difference, racial performance, and cultural hierarchy.
