This seminar course will explore aesthetics and social criticism of Japanese and Korean cinema, and interaction and relation between them from a perspective of intercultural communication. Informed by major film theories and historical readings, it aims to promote the intercultural sensivity and sympathy of students through the study of transnational status of Korean and Japanese cinema.
Each week, we will discuss the unique film styles, thematic concerns, and social commentary of leading Japanese and Korean directors. Class discussions will deepen understanding of film as a popular art form that expresses inequalities between gender, class, race, and ethnicity within and between two societies in local and global contexts.

本授業では、日本と韓国映画の美学と社会批評、そして両地域映画産業の相互作用と関係を異文化コミュニケーションの観点から考察する。主な映画理論と歴史的解釈に基づき、トランスナショナルな日韓映画研究を通じて学生の異文化感受性と共感を高めることを目指す。

授業では、日本と韓国の代表的な監督の主要作品を選定し、特有のフィルム・スタイルや主なテーマ、社会的メッセージ性を議論する。地域とグローバルな文脈で行われる作品分析とディスカッションを通じて、2つの社会内で、そして2つの社会間の性別、階級、人種、民族間の不平等を表現する大衆文化/芸術様式である映画に対する私たちの理解を深める。
