The History Boys, a play written by Alan Bennett, became a popular hit on the UK stages and was adapted into a even more popular film. We are going to read, and perform, in English, this ensemble drama of students and teachers of a high school. The main purpose of the classes will be for you to acquire basic knowledge and skills necessary for the expeience of literature.
The play's stage is a grammar school: Grammar schools are a form of British secondary educational system and provide education for students whose acadamic abilities are high. But they are quite different from public schools, which, while they are called 'public', are in fact elite private schools attended mostly by students from wealtier families. The main topic of the play is how the grammar school students who are to apply for Oxford and Cambridge respond to, and learn from, the instructions from two very different types of teachers--one a young man who behaves as a professional coach for entrance examinations, and the other a lovably eccentric old man who tries to share the enjoyment of literature with his students.
For the appreciation of this play, it is necessary to know about the historical events and works of literature referred to in it, and also about British society and culture. In this class, you will learn the skills of decoding the background information embedded in a work of literature and, at the same time, experience the ways to enjoy drama through performing scenes from the play.
This class is going to be conducted online to lessen your shyness to perform, but it is required that you should take active parts in the experience of performance.

多彩な学び科目
アラン・ベネット作の現代演劇『ヒストリー・ボーイズ』は、イギリスで評判をとったのち映画化されてヒットし、今では日本でも翻訳上演されています。高校を舞台に繰り広げられる生徒たちと教師たちの群像劇を英語で読み、そして実際に演じてみることで、文学を体験するのに必要な基礎的知識とスキルを身につけることが本授業の主な目標です。

舞台となるグラマー・スクールとは、イギリスの公立高校の一形態。学力の高い生徒が集まりますが、私立のエリート校であるパブリック・スクールとは違い、裕福な家庭の子供ばかりとは限りません。そのような学校においてオックスフォードやケンブリッジを目指す生徒たちが、二人の大変に異なった教員たち――ひとりは受験指導のプロに徹する若い教員、もうひとりは文学の楽しみを生徒たちに教えようとする一風変わった老教員――の授業にどう反応し、何を学ぶかがこの劇のテーマです。
この劇を理解するためには、作中で触れられる歴史や文学作品、そしてイギリス社会と文化に関する知識が欠かせません。この授業では、文学作品に埋め込まれたこうした背景知識の読み解き方を学ぶとともに、実際に脚本の場面場面を演じてみることで、ドラマを楽しむ方法を体感してもらいます。
演じることの恥ずかしさを軽減するためにオンライン授業という形態を取りますが、演じるという行為に積極的に参加することが求められます。
