Through modern French art, students will learn the basic ways of looking at art. They will also focus on French history and social context to understand the background in which works of art were created and demanded. By appreciating works of art from ancient times to the present day, students will develop the ability to think for themselves and understand the meaning of the works.
This course provides an overview of the development of modern French art from the late 18th century to the early 20th century. The Impressionists are famous for their modern French art, but these painters were also avant-garde artists who expressed themselves in innovative ways. How did the Impressionists depart from traditional artistic expression to create their own style? And how was their expression passed on to later generations? We will discuss these questions in the larger context of history and society. In class, we will show various works of art on slides and discuss them in detail, describing the works as we go.

フランス近代美術を通じて、美術の基本的な見方を学ぶ。またフランスの歴史や社会的文脈にも着目し、美術作品が制作され、かつ需要される背景を理解する。古い時代から現代までの美術作品を鑑賞する際に、自ら考察し、作品の意味を把握する能力を培う。
Through modern French art, students will learn the basic ways of looking at art. 18世紀後半－20世紀初頭までのフランス近代美術の展開を概観します。フランス近代美術といえば印象派が有名ですが、この画家たちは革新的な表現をした前衛芸術家でもありました。伝統的な美術表現からどのように逸脱して印象派が誕生したのでしょうか。またその表現が後世にどのように引き継がれていったのでしょうか。こうした問いを歴史や社会の幅広い文脈から論じます。授業ではさまざまな美術作品をスライドで示し、作品のディスクリプション（作品記述）をしながら細部まで見て解説します。
