Develop a perspective to understand art from social viewpoint.
To be able to approach works of art empirically and historically.
To be able to understand the issues of gender and postcolonialism in art.
The course examines the relationship between society and art with a focus on French art from the late 19th to the early 20th century, especially on modern art after Manet, and examines the relationship between industrial and decorative art and the so-called great arts, as well as issues such as ‘primitivism’, ‘orientalism’ and gender, while understanding the historical background of industrial development, urban modernisation, colonialism and World War I.

１９世紀後半から２０世紀にかけてのフランス美術を中心に、時代背景を理解しながら、産業の発展、都市の近代化、植民地主義と結びついた「プリミティヴィズム 」や「オリエンタリズム」、そしてジェンダーと言った諸問題を、具体的な作品を等して論じます。
The course examines the relationship between society and art with a focus on French art from the late 19th to the early 20th century, especially on modern art after Manet, and examines the relationship between industrial and decorative art and the so-called great arts, as well as issues such as ‘primitivism’, ‘orientalism’ and gender, while understanding the historical background of industrial development, urban modernisation, colonialism and World War I.
