Seen from its decorative and pictorial elements, a book can be defined as an artwork. Combined with the script, page layout, or cover design, which are characteristic elements of the book, students will learn the basics of book art, mainly of manuscript illumination that flourished before the invention of printing
In this course, students will study Western illuminated manuscripts held by major cultural institutions in and outside Japan, gaining practical skills for analyzing these works. The basics of codicology will be presented as an essential foundation. A historical and geographical survey of styles will be taught, followed by an in-depth analysis of decorative initials, marginalia, pictorial space, trompe-l'oeil, or text-image relationship. Students will write short essays during class, applying the key concepts they have learned, helping them develop valuable analytical skills.

彩飾写本はなじみが少ない領域である。内外の図書館、美術館のウェブサイト上の写本データベースを授業時に紹介するが、自分で多くの作例を閲覧し、授業で扱った用語や知識について復習をしておくこと。2回予定している小エッセイでは、初見の写本の1頁を専門用語を用いながら分析してもらう予定である。

多彩な学び科目
装飾や挿絵が挿入されることで、書物は工芸品とも美術作品ともなる。書体やレイアウト等の書物一般に特有のデザイン性を踏まえながら、特に印刷術以前の手書きの書物すなわち写本について美術史的な観点を中心に多角的に理解する。

西洋において活版印刷術の発明以前のおよそ1千年間に花開いた写本にほどこされた絵画的要素である彩飾について、内外のコレクションから代表作を紹介する。製本、書体、ページレイアウト等の書物に特徴的な形態について確認した後、挿絵や装飾に見る時代ごとの歴史的な展開、地域による固有性を概観する。さらに、頁上にテクストの書体と絵画的要素が共存する書物という媒体の特性を生かした表現について、装飾頭文字、欄外余白、遠近法とだまし絵、さらにテクスト内容と絵画的要素との関係などに注目して、様々な分析方法や解釈を紹介する。
