This lecture traces the history of what kind of image we have found in western music, and reexamines modern culture.
The culture of the 19th century was a period in which the basis of our culture was formed.
During this period, Western music was composed to be highly descriptive, reflecting visual images, and music came to be understood as expressing sentiment.
On the other hand, it was also during this period that spirituality was sought in music and people began to appreciate it.
By taking up music of the 19th century and placing it in the context of the society of the time, we will consider what kind of music around us today is composed and received.

この授業は通史ではなく、テーマに沿っていくつかの切り口から西洋音楽を中心に論じる。そのため、高校程度の世界史の知識があること、もしなくても自分で調べる積極性をもとめる。
楽譜は用いるが、専門的な知識は必要ない。ただ、中学で習う程度の楽譜の記号や音名等は理解できているものとして進める。
平常点は毎回、授業の要約を提出してもらい、授業内容の把握に即しておこなう。

人間は音楽にいかなるイメージを見出してきたのか、西洋音楽の歴史をたどり、現代の文化を問い直す。
This lecture traces the history of what kind of image we have found in western music, and reexamines modern culture.
19世紀は、現代文化の基礎が形づくられた時代である。
この時代、西洋音楽では、視覚的なイメージを反映した描写性の高い音楽が作曲され、また、感情をあらわすものとして音楽が意味づけられるようになった。
その一方で、音楽には精神性が求められ、鑑賞されるようになったのもこの時代である。
そうした19世紀の音楽を通して、現代の私たちの身の回りの音楽が、どのようなものとして作曲され、受容されているのか、考察をおこなう。
