Have you ever come across a great performance and felt frustrated because you wanted to tell someone about it, but couldn't quite put it into words? Music plays an important role in many different types of performance. For example, music is an essential component of opera, ballet and musicals. Furthermore, in sports, figure skating is so strongly linked to music that there is a section ‘Interpretation’ in the International Judging System. By looking at these performances from the perspective of the music, the aim is to gain a deeper understanding of these performances than could be achieved by simply watching them, and at the same time to acquire the ability to verbalise what moved you and how, which is difficult to express in words.
The course takes the form of exercises. After a general presentation by the teacher in the first few sessions, all students are asked to take charge of individual or group presentations. Each presentation will focus on one or more specific works (performances). The presenter is responsible for organising the basics of his/her genre (opera, ballet, figure skating, musicals), selecting the work to be presented and carrying out the necessary research. The presentation should be made in the form of a PowerPoint presentation or a resume to aid the students' appreciation of the work and the discussion that follows. Priority will be given to the active wishes and suggestions of the participants in order to avoid overlaps between groups.

受講生による個人もしくはグループ発表とそれに基づくディスカッションが主体となる授業です。まずは興味のあるジャンルを調べて基本事項を押さえた上で、そのジャンルの魅力を伝えるのにふさわしい作品を選んで情報を収集し、それらをまとめて発表を組み立ててください。自分が発表者でない時にも、受け身ではなく、積極的に質問やコメントをしましょう、互いに意見を交換することが視野の広い学びにつながっていきます。各ジャンルに関する事前の専門知識は必要ありませんが、発表で取り上げる作品について、これまでの自らの文化体験などと併せて、深めていこうとする姿勢が求められます。
初めの授業で各回の担当者を決定するので、初回の授業に必ず出席すること。取り上げる作品に迷う場合には、教員に相談してください。

素晴らしいパフォーマンスに出会ったとき、この感動を誰かに伝えたいと思いつつも、うまく言葉にできないもどかしさを感じたことはありませんか？さまざまなパフォーマンスの中で、音楽は重要な役割を果たします。例えば、オペラ、バレエ、ミュージカルでは、音楽が欠かせない構成要素となっていますし、スポーツのなかでもフィギュアスケートは採点の中に「音楽の解釈」という項目があるほど、音楽との結びつきが強いものです。これらのパフォーマンスを音楽と起点としてみていくことによって、ただ見ているだけでは到達できなかった深い理解を得ると同時に、どこにどう感動したのかといった言葉で表しにくい内容を言語化する能力を身につけることを目標とします。

演習形式でおこないます。初めの数回、教員が全般的なプレゼンテーションをおこなった後、全受講生に個人もしくはグループで発表を担当してもらいます。各回の発表では、具体的な作品（パフォーマンス）を1点以上取り上げることとします。担当者は、担当するジャンル（オペラ、バレエ、フィギュアスケート、ミュージカル）の基本事項を整理し、取り上げる作品を選定して必要事項を調査します。発表では、受講者の鑑賞のおよびその後の討論の助けになるよう、パワーポイントもしくはレジュメを作成した上で口頭発表をおこなってください。取り上げる作品については、受講者の積極的な希望、提案を優先し、グループ間で重ならないように調整する予定です。
