Cities and art music are closely interconnected. Historically, art music in Western societies could not exist without cities, and urban life was unthinkable without art music. In this course, we will explore how we, as individuals living in contemporary cities, engage with music and how music and our lives can be academically connected. This will be examined through historical events related to music. Although the cities discussed in the course are foreign and the time periods primarily belong to the past, we will examine the relationship between these distant times and spaces and our own lives. Through this exploration, students will gain knowledge in cultural studies, history, and musicology while also discovering the appeal and relevance of academic inquiry itself.
As a case study, the course will introduce various relationships between the lives of people in Russian cities (mainly Moscow and St. Petersburg) and music. By imagining the lifestyles of that era, we will explore and consider the historical and musicological significance of these relationships. Additionally, we will present examples of how such urban life, viewed from the perspective of the surviving musical works and the realities of daily life, can relate to our present-day experiences.

都市と芸術音楽は、緊密な関わりを持っている。旧来、西欧社会の芸術音楽は都市なくしてはありえず、都市生活は芸術音楽なくしてはありえなかった。本授業では、都市で時間を過ごす我々が音楽とどのような接点を持つのか、音楽と我々の生活が学問的にどのように結びつきうるのかを、音楽芸術に関わる歴史的事象を通じて考える。授業で取り上げる都市は外国で、取り上げる時代も主として過去だが、そうした時空間の隔たりと我々の生活との関係を各授業の中で検討することで、文化学・歴史学・音楽学の知識を得るとともに、学問自体のおもしろさとアクチュアリティを認識するきっかけにしてもらいたい。

ケーススタディとしてロシアの都市（主にモスクワとサンクト・ペテルブルク）の人々の生活と音楽との様々な関係を紹介し、当時の暮らしの様子を想像しながら、そうした関係がどのような歴史学的、音楽学的意味を有しているのかを示し、ともに考える。また、そうした都市生活が、残された音楽作品の面から、また生活の実際という面から、今の我々とどのように関係しうるかの一例を提示する。
