The objective of this course is to help students gain an understanding of Japanese society and culture by exploring the characteristics of architecture and cities, with a focus on the modern era and their transformation processes.
Japan has integrated various cultures, religions, political systems, and ideas from the Chinese continent, the Korean peninsula, and the West. These influences have been blended with Japan’s climate, geography, traditional culture, and religion to create diverse forms of architecture and cities.
Architecture and cities are not only places where people live but also spaces where new cultures are born and developed. This course focuses on the modern era (1868-1945), a time of rapid societal modernization driven by the introduction of Western culture. Students will explore Japanese life and living, with a particular focus on housing, and expand their understanding to include urban facilities.
Additionally, students will study the characteristics of Japanese architecture and cities, their transitions over time, and the lives and cultures of the people who inhabit them.

本講義は、主に近代における各時代の建築や都市の特徴とその変容過程を理解し、日本の社会・文化を考察する。
The objective of this course is to help students gain an understanding of Japanese society and culture by exploring the characteristics of architecture and cities, with a focus on the modern era and their transformation processes.
日本では、中国大陸・朝鮮半島・西洋から、その文化、宗教、政治制度、思想を取り込み、日本の気候風土や既存の文化・宗教と融合させ、様々な建築や都市を築いてきた。同時に、建築や都市は人々の生活の場であり、新たな文化が生まれ、育まれる場所でもある。本講義では、西洋文化の導入により社会全般の急速な近代化が進んだ明治時代から第二次世界大戦の終戦までの近代に注目し、住宅を中心に日本人の生活について学び、さらに都市施設へと視野を広げ、日本の建築や都市の特徴とその変遷、そこで生きていた人々の生活・文化を学ぶ。
