1. To understand the literary and cultural significance of Journey to the West and the character of Sun Wukong.
2. To examine the historical background and narrative features of Chinese vernacular (baihua) fiction, as well as its relationships with other textual traditions, including folk narratives and religious thought.
3. To analyze the transformation of representations of Sun Wukong in modern and contemporary Chinese society, with particular attention to political, media, and popular cultural contexts.
4. To develop critical reading and interpretive skills for a broad range of texts, including visual media, subculture, and video games.
This course explores the historical development of Chinese literature and culture through the figure of Sun Wukong, one of the most iconic characters in the history of Chinese literature. Taking the Ming-dynasty vernacular novel Journey to the West as its point of departure, the course traces the transformations of representations of Sun Wukong from the premodern period to the present. By examining literary works, folk narratives, visual culture, political propaganda, television dramas, films, animation, subculture, and video games, the course investigates how Sun Wukong has been narrated, visualized, and continually reimagined across diverse media forms. Building on this historical perspective, the course also situates the contemporary resurgence of Sun Wukong within popular culture, with particular attention to the commercial and cultural success of the action RPG Black Myth: Wukong, released in 2024 by the Chinese game company Game Science.
Through an interdisciplinary approach, students will analyze how the figure of Sun Wukong evokes shared cultural memory and collective imagination in Chinese society, and how the meanings associated with this character have evolved in response to changing historical, political, and media contexts.

中国において、孫悟空は単なる古典文学のキャラクターではなく、様々な時代の人々が「自由」、「抵抗」、「自己」について問い続けてきた思いを凝縮した存在です。激しく移り変わる現代社会においても、そうした問いは依然として重要です。本授業では、孫悟空の足跡をたどりながら、中国の近世・近代・現代にわたる文学・文化史を旅します。またそれだけでなく、この異郷のサルを一つの鏡として、現代を生きる若者として「どう生きるべきか」を共に考えていきたいと思います。
多彩な学び科目
① 『西遊記』および孫悟空というキャラクターの文学的・文化的意義を理解する。
② 中国白話小説の成立背景、ナラティブ、ならびに民間説話や宗教思想など他のテクストとの関係性を把握する。
③ 近代以降の中国社会における孫悟空像の変容を、政治・メディア・大衆文化の文脈で把握する。
④ 映像・サブカルチャー・ゲームを含む広義のテクストの読解力を養う。

本講義では、中国文学史上最も有名なキャラクターの一人である「孫悟空」を中心に、中国の文学・文化の流れを読み解いていく。明代の白話小説『西遊記』を出発点に、近世から現代に至る孫悟空像の変容を追いながら、文学作品、民間説話、視覚文化、政治的プロパガンダ、テレビドラマ、映画、アニメ、サブカルチャー、ゲームといった多様な表現メディアの中で、孫悟空がいかに語られ、描かれ、再構築されてきたのかを考察する。それらを踏まえて、2024年に中国のゲーム会社「Game Science」が発表したアクションRPGゲーム『黒神話：悟空』の大ヒットを背景に、孫悟空というキャラクターが中国社会でどのような共通の文化的記憶と想像力を喚起しているか、またその意味は時代とともにいかに変化してきたのかを学際的に探る。
具体的に、以下のようなテーマに沿って孫悟空の表現と受容の歴史を分析していく。
① 中国古典小説『西遊記』における孫悟空像の生成と文学的構造
② 中国民間伝承、宗教思想、神怪小説における孫悟空の起源と展開
③ 近代中国（清末・民国）における孫悟空像と近代の都市文化や視覚文化との関係
④ 社会主義中国（文革期）における孫悟空に対するイデオロギー的解釈とプロパガンダ利用
⑤ 1980年代以降のテレビドラマ・アニメ・ゲームを通じた孫悟空に関する国民的記憶の形成と再編
⑥ 1990年代以降のサブカルチャーにおける孫悟空像の変容と「反抗」、「自由」、「自我」に関する再認識
This course explores the historical development of Chinese literature and culture through the figure of Sun Wukong, one of the most iconic characters in the history of Chinese literature.
